Fredrick Buechner was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his B.A. from Yale University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and his M.A. and Ph.D
from Harvard University. He received the Massachusetts Cultural Council Award for Excellence in the Arts, the J.P. Taravella Award for Excellence in Teaching at Boston University, and the Lillian Goldman Distinguished Teacher Award for Instructional Excellence at Boston College.
At the time of his death, he was a full-time college professor of religion at Boston College, where he held the Thomas J. O'Meara Professor of Christian Morals Chair of Catholic Theology and Ethics in Residence at Boston College Law School, teaching courses on ethics and religious philosophy, as well as courses on ethics and law in society. One of his most notable contributions to ethics is The Power of Forgiveness, first published in 1991 by HarperSanFrancisco, which he co-authored with his wife Beth Buelow Keller, who died just before it appeared in print.
